8.Evaṃ me sutaṃ – ekaṃ samayaṃ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṃ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme. I have heard that on one occasion the Blessed One was staying near Sāvatthī at Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery.
Tena kho pana samayena āyasmā saṅgāmaji sāvatthiṃ anuppatto hoti bhagavantaṃ dassanāya. And on that occasion Ven. Saṅgāmaji had arrived in Sāvatthī to see the Blessed One.
Assosi kho āyasmato saṅgāmajissa purāṇadutiyikā – "ayyo kira saṅgāmaji sāvatthiṃ anuppatto"ti. His former wife heard, “Master Saṅgāmaji, they say, has arrived in Sāvatthī.”
Sā dārakaṃ ādāya jetavanaṃ agamāsi. Taking her small child, she went to Jeta’s Grove.
Tena kho pana samayena āyasmā saṅgāmaji aññatarasmiṃ rukkhamūle divāvihāraṃ nisinno hoti. On that occasion Ven. Saṅgāmaji was sitting at the root of a tree for the day’s abiding.
Atha kho āyasmato saṅgāmajissa purāṇadutiyikā yenāyasmā saṅgāmaji tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā āyasmantaṃ saṅgāmajiṃ etadavoca – "khuddaputtañhi [khuddaputtāmhi (sī.)], samaṇa, posa ma"nti. His former wife went to him and, on arrival, said to him, “Look after me, contemplative–(a woman) with a little son.”
Evaṃ vutte, āyasmā saṅgāmaji tuṇhī ahosi. When this was said, Ven. Saṅgāmaji remained silent.
Dutiyampi kho āyasmato saṅgāmajissa purāṇadutiyikā āyasmantaṃ saṅgāmajiṃ etadavoca – "khuddaputtañhi, samaṇa, posa ma"nti. A second time…
Dutiyampi kho āyasmā saṅgāmaji tuṇhī ahosi. [When this was said, Ven. Saṅgāmaji remained silent.]
Tatiyampi kho āyasmato saṅgāmajissa purāṇadutiyikā āyasmantaṃ saṅgāmajiṃ etadavoca – "khuddaputtañhi, samaṇa, posa ma"nti. A third time, his former wife said to him, “Look after me, contemplative–(a woman) with a little son.”
Tatiyampi kho āyasmā saṅgāmaji tuṇhī ahosi. A third time, Ven. Saṅgāmaji remained silent.
Atha kho āyasmato saṅgāmajissa purāṇadutiyikā taṃ dārakaṃ āyasmato saṅgāmajissa purato nikkhipitvā pakkāmi [pakkami (ka.) evamuparipi] – "eso [esa (sī. ka.)] te, samaṇa, putto; posa na"nti. Then his former wife, taking the baby and leaving him in front of Ven. Saṅgāmaji, went away, saying, “That’s your son, contemplative. Look after him.”
Atha kho āyasmā saṅgāmaji taṃ dārakaṃ neva olokesi nāpi ālapi. Then Ven. Saṅgāmaji neither looked at the child nor spoke to him.
Atha kho āyasmato saṅgāmajissa purāṇadutiyikā avidūraṃ [avidūre (syā. pī.)] gantvā apalokentī addasa āyasmantaṃ saṅgāmajiṃ taṃ dārakaṃ neva olokentaṃ nāpi ālapantaṃ, disvānassā etadahosi – "na cāyaṃ samaṇo puttenapi atthiko"ti. His wife, after going not far away, was looking back and saw Ven. Saṅgāmaji neither looking at the child nor speaking to him. On seeing this, the thought occurred to her, “The contemplative doesn’t even care about his son.”
Tato paṭinivattitvā dārakaṃ ādāya pakkāmi. Returning from there and taking the child, she left.
Addasā kho bhagavā dibbena cakkhunā visuddhena atikkantamānusakena āyasmato saṅgāmajissa purāṇadutiyikāya evarūpaṃ vippakāraṃ. The Blessed One–with his divine eye, purified and surpassing the human–saw Ven. Saṅgāmaji’s former wife misbehaving in that way.
Atha kho bhagavā etamatthaṃ viditvā tāyaṃ velāyaṃ imaṃ udānaṃ udānesi – Then, on realizing the significance of that, the Blessed One on that occasion exclaimed:
"Āyantiṃ nābhinandati, pakkamantiṃ na socati; At her coming, he didn’t delight; at her leaving, he didn’t grieve.
Saṅgā saṅgāmajiṃ muttaṃ, tamahaṃ brūmi brāhmaṇa"nti. aṭṭhamaṃ; A victor in battle, freed from the tie:1 He’s what I call a brahman.
