Ko imaṃ [komaṃ (ka.)] pathaviṃ vicessati [vijessati (sī. syā. pī.)], yamalokañca imaṃ sadevakaṃ;
|
Who shall overcome this earth, this realm of Yama and this sphere of men and gods?
|
|
Ko dhammapadaṃ sudesitaṃ, kusalo pupphamiva pacessati [pupphamivappacessati (ka.)].
|
Who shall bring to perfection the well-taught path of wisdom as an expert garland-maker would his floral design?
|
|

|
|
Sekho pathaviṃ vicessati, yamalokañca imaṃ sadevakaṃ;
|
A striver-on-the path shall overcome this earth, this realm of Yama and this sphere of men and gods.
|
|
Sekho dhammapadaṃ sudesitaṃ, kusalo pupphamiva pacessati.
|
The striver-on-the-path shall bring to perfection the well-taught path of wisdom, as an expert garland-maker would his floral design. [7]

|
Pheṇūpamaṃ kāyamimaṃ viditvā, marīcidhammaṃ abhisambudhāno;
|
Realizing that this body is like froth, penetrating its mirage-like nature,
|
|
Chetvāna mārassa papupphakāni [sapupphakāni (ṭīkā)], adassanaṃ maccurājassa gacche.
|
and plucking out Mara's flower-tipped arrows of sensuality, go beyond sight of the King of Death!
|

|
Pupphāni heva pacinantaṃ, byāsattamanasaṃ [byāsattamānasaṃ (ka.)] naraṃ;
|
the person of distracted mind who only plucks the flowers (of pleasure).
|
|
Suttaṃ gāmaṃ mahoghova, maccu ādāya gacchati.
|
As a mighty flood sweeps away the sleeping village, so death carries away
|
|

|
|
Pupphāni heva pacinantaṃ, byāsattamanasaṃ naraṃ;
|
person of distracted mind who only plucks the flowers (of pleasure)
|
|
Atittaññeva kāmesu, antako kurute vasaṃ.
|
insatiate in sense desires, The Destroyer brings under his sway
|
|

|
|
Yathāpi bhamaro pupphaṃ, vaṇṇagandhamaheṭhayaṃ [vaṇṇagandhamapoṭhayaṃ (ka.)] ;
|
As a bee from the flower without injuring its color or fragrance,
|
|
Paleti rasamādāya, evaṃ gāme munī care.
|
gathers honey even so the sage goes on his alms-round in the village. [8]
|
|

|
|
Na paresaṃ vilomāni, na paresaṃ katākataṃ;
|
Let none find fault with others; let none see the omissions and commissions of others.
|
|
Attanova avekkheyya, katāni akatāni ca.
|
But let one see one's own acts, done and undone.
|
|

|
Yathāpi ruciraṃ pupphaṃ, vaṇṇavantaṃ agandhakaṃ;
|
Like a beautiful flower full of color but without fragrance,
|
|
Evaṃ subhāsitā vācā, aphalā hoti akubbato.
|
even so, fruitless are the fair words of one who does not practice them.
|
|

|
Yathāpi ruciraṃ pupphaṃ, vaṇṇavantaṃ sugandhakaṃ [sagandhakaṃ (sī. syā. kaṃ. pī.)] ;
|
Like a beautiful flower full of color and also fragrant,
|
|
Evaṃ subhāsitā vācā, saphalā hoti kubbato [sakubbato (sī. pī.), pakubbato (sī. aṭṭha.), sukubbato (syā. kaṃ.)].
|
even so, fruitful are the fair words of one who practices them.
|
|

|
Yathāpi puppharāsimhā, kayirā mālāguṇe bahū;
|
As from a great heap of flowers many garlands can be made,
|
|
Evaṃ jātena maccena, kattabbaṃ kusalaṃ bahuṃ.
|
even so should many good deeds be done by one born a mortal.
|
|

|
|
Na pupphagandho paṭivātameti, na candanaṃ tagaramallikā [tagaramallikā (sī. syā. kaṃ. pī.)] ;
|
Not the sweet smell of flowers, not even the fragrance of sandal, tagara, or jasmine blows against the wind.
|
|
Satañca gandho paṭivātameti, sabbā disā sappuriso pavāyati.
|
But the fragrance of the virtuous blows against the wind. Truly the virtuous man pervades all directions with the fragrance of his virtue. [9]
|

|
Candanaṃ tagaraṃ vāpi, uppalaṃ atha vassikī;
|
— sandal, tagara, blue lotus and jasmine —
|
|
Etesaṃ gandhajātānaṃ, sīlagandho anuttaro.
|
Of all the fragrances the fragrance of virtue is the sweetest.
|
|

|
|
Appamatto ayaṃ gandho, yvāyaṃ tagaracandanaṃ [yāyaṃ tagaracandanī (sī. syā. kaṃ. pī.)] ;
|
Faint is the fragrance of tagara and sandal,
|
|
Yo ca sīlavataṃ gandho, vāti devesu uttamo.
|
but excellent is the fragrance of the virtuous, wafting even amongst the gods.
|
|

|
Tesaṃ sampannasīlānaṃ, appamādavihārinaṃ;
|
of the truly virtuous, who abide in heedfulness
|
|
Sammadaññā vimuttānaṃ, māro maggaṃ na vindati.
|
and are freed by perfect knowledge Mara never finds the path
|
|

|
|
Yathā saṅkāraṭhānasmiṃ [saṅkāradhānasmiṃ (sī. syā. kaṃ. pī.)], ujjhitasmiṃ mahāpathe;
|
Upon a heap of rubbish in the road-side ditch
|
|
Padumaṃ tattha jāyetha, sucigandhaṃ manoramaṃ.
|
blooms a lotus, fragrant and pleasing.
|
|
59.
|
59.
|
|
Evaṃ saṅkārabhūtesu, andhabhūte [andhībhūte (ka.)] puthujjane;
|
Even so, on the rubbish heap of blinded mortals
|
|
Atirocati paññāya, sammāsambuddhasāvako.
|
the disciple of the Supremely Enlightened One shines resplendent in wisdom.
|
|
Pupphavaggo catuttho niṭṭhito.
