1.Evaṃ me sutaṃ – ekaṃ samayaṃ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṃ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme.
|
Thus I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was living near Sävatthi in Jeta's Wood, Anäthapindika's Park.
|
|
Atha kho aññatarā devatā abhikkantāya rattiyā abhikkantavaṇṇā kevalakappaṃ jetavanaṃ obhāsetvā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ aṭṭhāsi.
|
A certain deity then in the night's last extreme, the extreme of whose brilliance set the whole of Jeta's Wood aglow, approached the Blessed One, and, after showing respect to him, stood at one side.
|
|
Ekamantaṃ ṭhitā kho sā devatā bhagavantaṃ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi –
|
And so standing, the deity addressed the Blessed One in verses thus:

|
|
"Bahū devā manussā ca, maṅgalāni acintayuṃ;
|
Gods and men there are full many That have tried to find good omens
|
|
Ākaṅkhamānā sotthānaṃ, brūhi maṅgalamuttamaṃ".
|
Which, they hope, will bring them safety: Tell, then, the supreme good omen.
|
|

|
|
"Asevanā ca bālānaṃ, paṇḍitānañca sevanā;
|
Not consorting with the foolish, Rather with the wise consorting,
|
|
Pūjā ca pūjaneyyānaṃ [pūjanīyānaṃ (sī. syā. kaṃ. pī.)], etaṃ maṅgalamuttamaṃ.
|
Honouring the honourable: This is a supreme good omen.
|
|

|
|
"Patirūpadesavāso ca, pubbe ca katapuññatā;
|
Living in befitting places, Having in the past made merit,
|
|
Attasammāpaṇidhi [atthasammāpaṇīdhī (katthaci)] ca, etaṃ maṅgalamuttamaṃ.
|
Right direction in self-guidance: This is a supreme good omen,
|
|

|
|
"Bāhusaccañca sippañca, vinayo ca susikkhito;
|
Ample learning, and a craft, too, With a well-trained disciplining,
|
|
Subhāsitā ca yā vācā, etaṃ maṅgalamuttamaṃ.
|
Any speech that is well spoken: This is a supreme good omen.
|
|

|
"Mātāpitu upaṭṭhānaṃ, puttadārassa saṅgaho;
|
Aid for mother and for father, And support for wife and children,
|
|
Anākulā ca kammantā, etaṃ maṅgalamuttamaṃ.
|
Spheres of work that bring no conflict: This is a supreme good omen.
|
|

|
|
"Dānañca dhammacariyā ca, ñātakānañca saṅgaho;
|
Giving, True-Ideal conduct, With support for kin provided,
|
|
Anavajjāni kammāni, etaṃ maṅgalamuttamaṃ.
|
Unexceptionable actions: This is a supreme good omen.
|
|

|
|
"Āratī viratī pāpā, majjapānā ca saṃyamo;
|
Shrinking, abstinence, from evil, From besotting drink refraining,
|
|
Appamādo ca dhammesu, etaṃ maṅgalamuttamaṃ.
|
Diligence in True Ideals: This is a supreme good omen.
|
|

|
|
"Gāravo ca nivāto ca, santuṭṭhi ca kataññutā;
|
Then respect, and humble manner, With content, and grateful bearing,
|
|
Kālena dhammassavanaṃ [dhammassāvaṇaṃ (ka. sī.), dhammasavanaṃ (ka. sī.)], etaṃ maṅgalamuttamaṃ.
|
Hearing Truth when it is timely: This is a supreme good omen.
|
|

|
|
"Khantī ca sovacassatā, samaṇānañca dassanaṃ;
|
Patience, meekness when corrected, Seeing monks,
|
|
Kālena dhammasākacchā, etaṃ maṅgalamuttamaṃ.
|
and then discussion Of the Truth when it is timely: This is a supreme good omen.
|
|

|
|
"Tapo ca brahmacariyañca, ariyasaccāna dassanaṃ;
|
Ardour, a Divine Life leading, Seeing Truths that are called Noble,
|
|
Nibbānasacchikiriyā ca, etaṃ maṅgalamuttamaṃ.
|
Realization of Extinction: This is a supreme good omen.
|
|
12.
|
|
|
"Phuṭṭhassa lokadhammehi, cittaṃ yassa na kampati;
|
Though by worldly ideas tempted Ne'er his cognizance shall waver,
|
|
Asokaṃ virajaṃ khemaṃ, etaṃ maṅgalamuttamaṃ.
|
Sorrowless, secure, stainless: This is a supreme good omen.
|
|
13.
|
|
|
"Etādisāni katvāna, sabbatthamaparājitā;
|
Since by working suchlike [omens] Men are everywhere unvanquished
|
|
Sabbattha sotthiṃ gacchanti, taṃ tesaṃ maṅgalamuttama"nti.
|
And go everywhere in safety, That is their supreme good omen.
|
|
Maṅgalasuttaṃ niṭṭhitaṃ.
