326.Tena samayena buddho bhagavā cetiyesu cārikaṃ caramāno yena bhaddavatikā tena pāyāsi. … touring for alms in the Cetiya country, set out for Bhaddavatikā.
Addasaṃsu kho gopālakā pasupālakā kassakā pathāvino bhagavantaṃ dūratova āgacchantaṃ. Cowherds, goatherds, yeomen farmers, travellers saw the lord coming from afar,
Disvāna bhagavantaṃ etadavocuṃ – "mā kho, bhante, bhagavā ambatitthaṃ agamāsi. and seeing him they spoke thus to the lord: “Do not, lord, let the lord go to Ambatittha;
Ambatitthe, bhante, jaṭilassa assame nāgo paṭivasati iddhimā āsiviso [āsīviso (sī. syā.)] ghoraviso. lord, in Ambatittha a serpent lives in a matted-haired ascetic’s hermitage; he has psychic potency, he is a terribly venomous snake;
So bhagavantaṃ mā viheṭhesī"ti. do not let him hurt the lord.”
Evaṃ vutte bhagavā tuṇhī ahosi. When they had spoken thus, the lord became silent.
Dutiyampi kho - pe - tatiyampi kho gopālakā pasupālakā kassakā pathāvino bhagavantaṃ etadavocuṃ – "mā kho, bhante, bhagavā ambatitthaṃ agamāsi. And a second time … And a third time cowherds, goatherds, yeomen farmers, travellers spoke thus to the lord: “Do not, lord, let the lord go to Ambatittha;
Ambatitthe, bhante, jaṭilassa assame nāgo paṭivasati iddhimā āsiviso ghoraviso.
So bhagavantaṃ mā viheṭhesī"ti. … do not let him hurt the lord.”
Tatiyampi kho bhagavā tuṇhī ahosi. And a third time the lord became silent.
Atha kho bhagavā anupubbena cārikaṃ caramāno yena bhaddavatikā tadavasari. Then the lord, touring for alms, in the course of time arrived at Bhaddavatikā.
Tatra sudaṃ bhagavā bhaddavatikāyaṃ viharati. The lord stayed there at Bhaddavatika.
Atha kho āyasmā sāgato yena ambatitthassa [ambatitthakassa (sī.), ambatitthaṃ (syā.)] jaṭilassa assamo tenupasaṅkami ; upasaṅkamitvā agyāgāraṃ pavisitvā tiṇasanthārakaṃ paññapetvā nisīdi pallaṅkaṃ ābhujitvā ujuṃ kāyaṃ paṇidhāya parimukhaṃ satiṃ upaṭṭhapetvā. Then the venerable Sāgata approached the hermitage of the matted-hair ascetic of Ambatittha, and having approached, having entered the fire-room, having made ready the grass mat, he sat down cross-legged, the back erect, having caused mindfulness to be present in front of him.
Addasā kho so nāgo āyasmantaṃ sāgataṃ paviṭṭhaṃ. Then that serpent, seeing that the venerable Sāgata had entered,
Disvāna dummano [dukkhī dummano (sī. syā.)] padhūpāyi [padhūpāsi (syā. ka.)]. bad at heart, blew forth smoke.
Āyasmāpi sāgato padhūpāyi [padhūpāsi (syā. ka.)]. And the venerable Sāgata blew forth smoke.
Atha kho so nāgo makkhaṃ asahamāno pajjali. Then that serpent, not conquering anger, blazed up,
Āyasmāpi sāgato tejodhātuṃ samāpajjitvā pajjali. and the venerable Sāgata, having attained to the condition of heat, blazed up.
Atha kho āyasmā sāgato tassa nāgassa tejasā tejaṃ pariyādiyitvā yena bhaddavatikā tenupasaṅkami. Then the venerable Sāgata, having mastered by heat that serpent’s heat, approached Bhaddavatika.
Atha kho bhagavā bhaddavatikāyaṃ yathābhirantaṃ viharitvā yena kosambī tena cārikaṃ pakkāmi. Then the lord, having stayed at Bhaddavatikā for as long as he found suitable, departed on an alms-tour to Kosambī.
Assosuṃ kho kosambikā upāsakā – "ayyo kira sāgato ambatitthikena nāgena saddhiṃ saṅgāmesī"ti. Lay-followers of Kosambī heard: “They say that master Sāgata came into conflict with the serpent of Ambatittha.”
Atha kho bhagavā anupubbena cārikaṃ caramāno yena kosambī tadavasari. Then the lord, touring for alms, in the course of time arrived at Kosambī.
Atha kho kosambikā upāsakā bhagavato paccuggamanaṃ karitvā yenāyasmā sāgato tenupasaṅkamiṃsu; upasaṅkamitvā āyasmantaṃ sāgataṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ aṭṭhaṃsu. Then the lay-followers of Kosambī, having met the lord, approached the venerable Sāgata; having approached, having greeted the venerable Sāgata, they stood at a respectful distance.
Ekamantaṃ ṭhitā kho kosambikā upāsakā āyasmantaṃ sāgataṃ etadavocuṃ – "kiṃ, bhante, ayyānaṃ dullabhañca manāpañca, kiṃ paṭiyādemā"ti? As they were standing at a respectful distance, the lay-followers of Kosambī spoke thus to the venerable Sāgata: “Honoured sir, what is hard for the masters to obtain, and liked (by them)? What may we give? ”
Evaṃ vutte chabbaggiyā bhikkhū kosambike upāsake etadavocuṃ – "atthāvuso, kāpotikā nāma pasannā bhikkhūnaṃ dullabhā ca manāpā ca, taṃ paṭiyādethā"ti. When they had spoken thus, the group of six monks spoke thus to the lay-followers of Kosambī: “There is, your reverences, a spirituous liquor called white spirits; it is hard for the monks to obtain, and liked (by them). Give that.”
Atha kho kosambikā upāsakā ghare ghare kāpotikaṃ pasannaṃ paṭiyādetvā āyasmantaṃ sāgataṃ piṇḍāya paviṭṭhaṃ disvāna āyasmantaṃ sāgataṃ etadavocuṃ – "pivatu, bhante, ayyo sāgato kāpotikaṃ pasannaṃ, pivatu, bhante, ayyo sāgato kāpotikaṃ pasanna"nti. Then the lay-followers of Kosambī having given the spirituous liquor, white spirits, in house after house, seeing that the venerable Sāgata had entered for alms-food, spoke thus to the venerable Sāgata: “Honoured sir, let master Sāgata drink the spirituous liquor, white spirits; honoured sir, let master Sāgata drink the spirituous liquor, white spirits.”
Atha kho āyasmā sāgato ghare ghare kāpotikaṃ pasannaṃ pivitvā nagaramhā nikkhamanto nagaradvāre paripati. Then the venerable Sagata, having drunk the spirituous liquor, white spirits, in house after house, as he was departing from the town fell down at the town-gate.
Atha kho bhagavā sambahulehi bhikkhūhi saddhiṃ nagaramhā nikkhamanto addasa āyasmantaṃ sāgataṃ nagaradvāre paripatantaṃ. Then the lord, departing from the town with a great company of monks, saw the venerable Sāgata fallen down at the town-gate;
Disvāna bhikkhū āmantesi – "gaṇhatha, bhikkhave, sāgata"nti. seeing him, he addressed the monks, saying: “Monks, take up Sāgata.”
"Evaṃ, bhante"ti kho te bhikkhū bhagavato paṭissuṇitvā āyasmantaṃ sāgataṃ ārāmaṃ netvā yena bhagavā tena sīsaṃ katvā nipātesuṃ. “Yes, lord,” and these monks having answered the lord, having led the venerable Sāgata to the monastery, made him lie down with his head towards the lord.
Atha kho āyasmā sāgato parivattitvā yena bhagavā tena pāde karitvā seyyaṃ kappesi. Then the venerable Sāgata, having turned round, went to sleep with his feet towards the lord.
Atha kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi – "nanu, bhikkhave, pubbe sāgato tathāgate sagāravo ahosi sappatisso"ti ? Then the lord addressed the monks, saying: “Monks, formerly was not Sāgata respectful, deferential towards the Tathāgata? ”
"Evaṃ, bhante". “Yes, lord.”
"Api nu kho, bhikkhave, sāgato etarahi tathāgate sagāravo sappatisso"ti? “But monks, is Sāgata respectful, deferential towards the Tathāgata now? ”
"No hetaṃ, bhante". “No, lord.”
"Nanu, bhikkhave, sāgato ambatitthikena nāgena [ḍeḍḍubhenāpi (sī. syā.)] saddhiṃ saṅgāmesī"ti? “Monks, did not Sāgata come into conflict with the serpent of Ambatittha? ”
"Evaṃ, bhante". “Yes, lord.”
"Api nu kho, bhikkhave, sāgato etarahi pahoti nāgena saddhiṃ saṅgāmetu"nti? “But, monks, is Sāgata able to come into conflict with the serpent of Ambatittha now? ”
"No hetaṃ, bhante". “No, lord.”
"Api nu kho, bhikkhave, taṃ pātabbaṃ yaṃ pivitvā visaññī assā"ti? “But, monks, could he become unconscious, having drunk that which may be drunk? ”
"No hetaṃ, bhante". “No, lord.”
"Ananucchavikaṃ, bhikkhave, sāgatassa ananulomikaṃ appatirūpaṃ assāmaṇakaṃ akappiyaṃ akaraṇīyaṃ. “Monks, it is not fitting for Sāgata, it is not becoming, it is not suitable, it is not worthy of a recluse, it is not allowable, it is not to be done.
Kathañhi nāma, bhikkhave, sāgato majjaṃ pivissati! How, monks, can Sāgata drink strong drink?
Netaṃ, bhikkhave, appasannānaṃ vā pasādāya - pe - evañca pana, bhikkhave, imaṃ sikkhāpadaṃ uddiseyyātha – It is not, monks, for pleasing those who are not (yet) pleased … And thus, monks, this rule of training should be set forth:
327."Surāmerayapāne pācittiya"nti. “In drinking fermented liquor and spirits there is an offence of expiation.”
328.Surā nāma piṭṭhasurā pūvasurā odanasurā kiṇṇapakkhittā sambhārasaṃyuttā. Fermented liquor means: if it is fermented liquor from flour, fermented liquor from cakes, fermented liquor from cooked rice, if it is worked-up yeast, if it is mixed with ingredients.
Merayo nāma pupphāsavo phalāsavo madhvāsavo guḷāsavo sambhārasaṃyutto. Spirits means: if it is an extract from flowers, an extract from fruits, an extract from honey, an extract from sugar, if it is mixed with ingredients.
Piveyyāti antamaso kusaggenapi pivati, āpatti pācittiyassa. Should drink means: if he drinks even (as much as) with a blade of grass, there is an offence of expiation.
Majje majjasaññī pivati, āpatti pācittiyassa. If he thinks that it is strong drink when it is strong drink, (and) drinks it, there is an offence of expiation.
Majje vematiko pivati, āpatti pācittiyassa. If he is in doubt as to whether it is strong drink …
Majje amajjasaññī pivati, āpatti pācittiyassa. If he thinks that it is not strong drink when it is strong drink, (and) drinks it, there is an offence of expiation.
Amajje majjasaññī, āpatti dukkaṭassa. If he thinks that it is strong drink when it is not strong drink, there is an offence of wrong-doing.
Amajje vematiko, āpatti dukkaṭassa. If he is in doubt as to whether it is not strong drink, there is an offence of wrong-doing.
Amajje amajjasaññī, anāpatti. If he thinks that it is not strong drink when it is not strong drink, there is no offence.
329.Anāpatti amajjañca hoti majjavaṇṇaṃ majjagandhaṃ majjarasaṃ taṃ pivati, sūpasampāke, maṃsasampāke, telasampāke, āmalakaphāṇite, amajjaṃ ariṭṭhaṃ pivati, ummattakassa, ādikammikassāti. There is no offence if he drinks that which is not strong drink though it comes to be the colour of strong drink, the smell of strong drink, the taste of strong drink; if it is in a concoction of broth, in a concoction of meat, in a concoction of oil, in molasses and emblic myrobalam; if he drinks a distilled liquor that is not strong drink; if he is mad, if he is the first wrong-doer.
Surāpānasikkhāpadaṃ niṭṭhitaṃ paṭhamaṃ.
