Comm. NT: 40. What the story is trying to illustrate is the rapidity with which the elder entered the jhāna, controlled its duration, and emerged, which is the necessary preliminary to the working of a marvel (the creation of a rock in this case; XII.57). The last remark seems to indicate that all the others would have been too slow (see Vism-mhṭ 150).
