So āha – "buddhānaṃ, bhante, patthanā kīva ciraṃ vaṭṭatī"ti? Buddhānaṃ, ānanda, heṭṭhimaparicchedena cattāri asaṅkhyeyyāni kappasatasahassañca, majjhimaparicchedena aṭṭha asaṅkhyeyyāni kappasatasahassañca, uparimaparicchedena soḷasa asaṅkhyeyyāni kappasatasahassañca. Ete ca bhedā paññādhikasaddhādhikavīriyādhikavasena ñātabbā. Paññādhikānañhi saddhā mandā hoti, paññā tikkhā. Saddhādhikānaṃ paññā majjhimā hoti, saddhā balavā. Vīriyādhikānaṃ saddhāpaññā mandā, vīriyaṃ balavanti. Appatvā pana cattāri asaṅkhyeyyāni kappasatasahassañca divase divase vessantaradānasadisaṃ dānaṃ dentopi tadanurūpasīlādisabbapāramidhamme ācinantopi antarā buddho bhavissatīti netaṃ ṭhānaṃ vijjati. Kasmā? Ñāṇaṃ gabbhaṃ na gaṇhāti, vepullaṃ nāpajjati, paripākaṃ na gacchatīti. Yathā nāma timāsacatumāsapañcamāsaccayena nipphajjanakaṃ sassaṃ taṃ taṃ kālaṃ appatvā divase divase sahassakkhattuṃ keḷāyantopi udakena siñcantopi antarā pakkhena vā māsena vā nipphādessatīti netaṃ ṭhānaṃ vijjati. Kasmā? Sassaṃ gabbhaṃ na gaṇhāti, vepullaṃ nāpajjati, paripākaṃ na gacchatīti. Evamevaṃ appatvā cattāri asaṅkhyeyyāni - pe - netaṃ ṭhānaṃ vijjatīti. Tasmā yathāvuttameva kālaṃ pāramipūraṇaṃ kātabbaṃ ñāṇaparipākatthāya. Ettakenapi ca kālena buddhattaṃ patthayato abhinīhārakaraṇe aṭṭha sampattiyo icchitabbā. Ayañhi –

So āha – "buddhānaṃ, bhante, patthanā kīva ciraṃ vaṭṭatī"ti? Ānanda asked: “Bhante, how long does it take for the aspiration of buddhas to be achieved?”
Buddhānaṃ, ānanda, heṭṭhimaparicchedena cattāri asaṅkhyeyyāni kappasatasahassañca, majjhimaparicchedena aṭṭha asaṅkhyeyyāni kappasatasahassañca, uparimaparicchedena soḷasa asaṅkhyeyyāni kappasatasahassañca. [The Buddha replied:] “For buddhas, Ānanda, it takes at minimum four incalculables and 100,000 eons; at the middling level, eight incalculables and 100,000 eons; at the maximum, sixteen incalculables and 100,000 eons.
Ete ca bhedā paññādhikasaddhādhikavīriyādhikavasena ñātabbā. And these divisions should be understood respectively in the case of those for whom wisdom is predominant, those for whom faith is predominant, and those for whom energy is predominant.
Paññādhikānañhi saddhā mandā hoti, paññā tikkhā. In those for whom wisdom is predominant, faith is weak and wisdom is sharp (and energy middling).
Saddhādhikānaṃ paññā majjhimā hoti, saddhā balavā. In those for whom faith is predominant, wisdom is middling (and faith is strong).369
Vīriyādhikānaṃ saddhāpaññā mandā, vīriyaṃ balavanti. In those for whom energy is predominant, faith and wisdom are weak and energy is strong.370
Appatvā pana cattāri asaṅkhyeyyāni kappasatasahassañca divase divase vessantaradānasadisaṃ dānaṃ dentopi tadanurūpasīlādisabbapāramidhamme ācinantopi antarā buddho bhavissatīti netaṃ ṭhānaṃ vijjati. But without having completed four incalculables and 100,000 eons, there is no possibility that one could become a buddha earlier, even if one were to give gifts day after day like those of Vessantara and to accumulate all the other pāramīs, such as good behavior, to a corresponding degree.371
Kasmā? Why not?
Ñāṇaṃ gabbhaṃ na gaṇhāti, vepullaṃ nāpajjati, paripākaṃ na gacchatīti. Because one’s knowledge would not have commenced, nor expanded, nor reached maturity.
Yathā nāma timāsacatumāsapañcamāsaccayena nipphajjanakaṃ sassaṃ taṃ taṃ kālaṃ appatvā divase divase sahassakkhattuṃ keḷāyantopi udakena siñcantopi antarā pakkhena vā māsena vā nipphādessatīti netaṃ ṭhānaṃ vijjati. It is just as when grain is growing that needs three, four, or five months to ripen: it is impossible that without having completed that time, the grain might ripen earlier—in a fortnight or a month—even though one fondles it and waters it a thousand times daily.
Kasmā? Why not?
Sassaṃ gabbhaṃ na gaṇhāti, vepullaṃ nāpajjati, paripākaṃ na gacchatīti. Because the grain would not have commenced, nor expanded, nor reached maturity.
Evamevaṃ appatvā cattāri asaṅkhyeyyāni - pe - netaṃ ṭhānaṃ vijjatīti. So too, without having completed four incalculables and 100,000 eons, there is no possibility that one could become a buddha.
Tasmā yathāvuttameva kālaṃ pāramipūraṇaṃ kātabbaṃ ñāṇaparipākatthāya. Therefore the fulfilling of the pāramīs must be pursued over the aforementioned time for the maturation of knowledge.”
Ettakenapi ca kālena buddhattaṃ patthayato abhinīhārakaraṇe aṭṭha sampattiyo icchitabbā. And for one aspiring for buddhahood over such a period of time, eight prerequisites must be met for making the undertaking.
Ayañhi –
