Yaṃ pana taṃ raññā pathaviṃ unnādetvā brāhmaṇassa piyaputtesu dinnesu yāva brahmalokā ekakolāhalaṃ jātaṃ, tenapi bhijjamānahadayā viya himavantavāsino devā tesaṃ brāhmaṇena niyamānānaṃ taṃ vilāpaṃ sutvā mantayiṃsu "sace maddī kālasseva assamaṃ āgamissati, tattha puttake adisvā vessantaraṃ pucchitvā brāhmaṇassa dinnabhāvaṃ sutvā balavasinehena padānupadaṃ dhāvitvā mahantaṃ dukkhaṃ anubhaveyyā"ti.

Now whereas the king gave his dearly beloved children to the brahmin, the earth did resound with a great uproar that reached even to Brahma's heaven and pierced the hearts of the deities which dwelt in Himavat: who, hearing the children's lamentation as the man drove them along, thought with themselves, "If Maddī come betimes to the hermitage, not seeing her children she will ask Vessantara about it; great will be her longing when she hears that they have been given away; she will run after them, and will get into great trouble:

Земля заревела, когда царь отдал своих дорогих детей брахману. Мира Брахмы достиг этот шум и ранил сердца дэвов, обитающих на вершинах Гималаев. Услышав слова, уводимых брахманом, они посоветовались: "Если Мадди придет в ашрам раньше, тогда не увидев детей, услышав от Вессантары о том, что он проявил щедрость к брахману, из-за сильной привязанности она побежит в след за ними и попадет в большую беду!"

Atha te tayo devaputte "tumhe sīhabyagghadīpivese nimminitvā deviyā āgamanamaggaṃ sannirumbhitvā yāciyamānāpi yāva sūriyatthaṅgamanā maggaṃ adatvā yathā candālokena assamaṃ pavisissati, evamassā sīhādīnampi aviheṭhanatthāya ārakkhaṃ susaṃvihitaṃ kareyyāthā"ti āṇāpesuṃ.

so they instructed three of the gods to take upon them the shape of a lion and a tiger and a pard, and to obstruct her way, not to let her go back for all her asking until the setting of the sun, that she might only get back by moonlight, guarding her safe from the attacks of lions and other wild beasts.
