Evaṃ vutte, āyasmā udeno caṅkamā orohitvā vihāraṃ pavisitvā paññatte āsane nisīdi. Ghoṭamukhopi kho brāhmaṇo caṅkamā orohitvā vihāraṃ pavisitvā ekamantaṃ aṭṭhāsi. Ekamantaṃ ṭhitaṃ kho ghoṭamukhaṃ brāhmaṇaṃ āyasmā udeno etadavoca – "saṃvijjanti [saṃvijjante (bahūsu)] kho, brāhmaṇa, āsanāni. Sace ākaṅkhasi, nisīdā"ti. "Etadeva kho pana mayaṃ bhoto udenassa āgamayamānā (na) nisīdāma. Kathañhi nāma mādiso pubbe animantito āsane nisīditabbaṃ maññeyyā"ti? Atha kho ghoṭamukho brāhmaṇo aññataraṃ nīcaṃ āsanaṃ gahetvā ekamantaṃ nisīdi. Ekamantaṃ nisinno kho ghoṭamukho brāhmaṇo āyasmantaṃ udenaṃ etadavoca – "ambho samaṇa, 'natthi dhammiko paribbajo' – evaṃ me ettha hoti. Tañca kho bhavantarūpānaṃ vā adassanā, yo vā panettha dhammo"ti. "Sace kho pana me tvaṃ, brāhmaṇa, anuññeyyaṃ anujāneyyāsi, paṭikkositabbañca paṭikkoseyyāsi; yassa ca pana me bhāsitassa atthaṃ na jāneyyāsi, mamaṃyeva tattha uttari paṭipuccheyyāsi – 'idaṃ, bho udena, kathaṃ, imassa kvattho'ti? Evaṃ katvā siyā no ettha kathāsallāpo"ti. Ekamantaṃ ṭhitaṃ kho ghoṭamukhaṃ brāhmaṇaṃ āyasmā udeno etadavoca – "saṃvijjanti [saṃvijjante (bahūsu)] kho, brāhmaṇa, āsanāni. Then the venerable Udena said to him: "There are seats, brahmin,
Sace ākaṅkhasi, nisīdā"ti. sit down if you wish."
"Etadeva kho pana mayaṃ bhoto udenassa āgamayamānā (na) nisīdāma. "We did not sit down because we were waiting for Master Udena [to speak].
Kathañhi nāma mādiso pubbe animantito āsane nisīditabbaṃ maññeyyā"ti? For how could one like myself presume to sit down on a seat without first being invited to do so?"
Atha kho ghoṭamukho brāhmaṇo aññataraṃ nīcaṃ āsanaṃ gahetvā ekamantaṃ nisīdi. 4. Then the brahmin Ghotamukha took a low seat, sat down at one side,
Ekamantaṃ nisinno kho ghoṭamukho brāhmaṇo āyasmantaṃ udenaṃ etadavoca – "ambho samaṇa, 'natthi dhammiko paribbajo' – evaṃ me ettha hoti. and said to the venerable Udena: "Worthy recluse, there is no wanderers' life that accords with the Dhamma: so it seems to me here,
Tañca kho bhavantarūpānaṃ vā adassanā, yo vā panettha dhammo"ti. and that may be because I have not seen such venerable ones as yourself or [because I have not seen] the Dhamma here."
"Sace kho pana me tvaṃ, brāhmaṇa, anuññeyyaṃ anujāneyyāsi, paṭikkositabbañca paṭikkoseyyāsi; yassa ca pana me bhāsitassa atthaṃ na jāneyyāsi, mamaṃyeva tattha uttari paṭipuccheyyāsi – 'idaṃ, bho udena, kathaṃ, imassa kvattho'ti? "Brahmin, if you think any statement of mine is to be agreed with, then agree with it; if you think any statement of mine is to be argued against, then argue against it; and if you do not understand the meaning of any statement of mine, ask me to clarify it thus: 'How is this, Master Udena? What is the meaning of this?"
Evaṃ katvā siyā no ettha kathāsallāpo"ti. In this way we can discuss this matter."
"Anuññeyyaṃ khvāhaṃ bhoto udenassa anujānissāmi, paṭikkositabbañca paṭikkosissāmi; yassa ca panāhaṃ bhoto udenassa bhāsitassa atthaṃ na jānissāmi, bhavantaṃyeva tattha udenaṃ uttari paṭipucchissāmi – 'idaṃ, bho udena, kathaṃ, imassa kvattho'ti? "Master Udena, if I think any statement of Master Udena's is to be agreed with, I shall agree with it; if I think any statement of his is to be argued against, I shall argue against it; and if I do not understand the meaning of any statement of Master Udena's, then I shall ask Master Udena to clarify it thus: 'How is this Master Udena? What is the meaning of this?"
Evaṃ katvā hotu no ettha kathāsallāpo"ti. In this way let us discuss this matter."
