12. "Puna caparaṃ, bhikkhave, bhikkhu iti paṭisañcikkhati – 'yathāsukhaṃ kho me viharato akusalā dhammā abhivaḍḍhanti, kusalā dhammā parihāyanti; dukkhāya pana me attānaṃ padahato akusalā dhammā parihāyanti, kusalā dhammā abhivaḍḍhanti. Yaṃnūnāhaṃ dukkhāya attānaṃ padaheyya'nti. So dukkhāya attānaṃ padahati. Tassa dukkhāya attānaṃ padahato akusalā dhammā parihāyanti kusalā dhammā abhivaḍḍhanti. So na aparena samayena dukkhāya attānaṃ padahati. Taṃ kissa hetu? Yassa hi so, bhikkhave, bhikkhu atthāya dukkhāya attānaṃ padaheyya svāssa attho abhinipphanno hoti. Tasmā na aparena samayena dukkhāya attānaṃ padahati. Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, usukāro tejanaṃ dvīsu alātesu ātāpeti paritāpeti ujuṃ karoti kammaniyaṃ. Yato kho, bhikkhave, usukārassa tejanaṃ dvīsu alātesu ātāpitaṃ hoti paritāpitaṃ ujuṃ kataṃ [ujuṃ kataṃ hoti (sī.)] kammaniyaṃ, na so taṃ aparena samayena usukāro tejanaṃ dvīsu alātesu ātāpeti paritāpeti ujuṃ karoti kammaniyaṃ. Taṃ kissa hetu? Yassa hi so, bhikkhave, atthāya usukāro tejanaṃ dvīsu alātesu ātāpeyya paritāpeyya ujuṃ kareyya kammaniyaṃ svāssa attho abhinipphanno hoti. Tasmā na aparena samayena usukāro tejanaṃ dvīsu alātesu ātāpeti paritāpeti ujuṃ karoti kammaniyaṃ. "Again, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu considers thus: 'While I live according to my pleasure, unwholesome states increase in me and wholesome states diminish; but when I exert myself in what is painful, unwholesome states diminish in me and wholesome states increase.
Yaṃnūnāhaṃ dukkhāya attānaṃ padaheyya'nti. What if I exert myself in what is painful?"
So dukkhāya attānaṃ padahati. He exerts himself in what is painful.
Tassa dukkhāya attānaṃ padahato akusalā dhammā parihāyanti kusalā dhammā abhivaḍḍhanti. When he does so, unwholesome states diminish in him and wholesome states increase.934
So na aparena samayena dukkhāya attānaṃ padahati. At a later time he does not exert himself in what is painful.
Taṃ kissa hetu? Why is that?
Yassa hi so, bhikkhave, bhikkhu atthāya dukkhāya attānaṃ padaheyya svāssa attho abhinipphanno hoti. The purpose for which that bhikkhu exerted himself in what is painful has been achieved;
Tasmā na aparena samayena dukkhāya attānaṃ padahati. that is why at a later time he does not exert himself in what is painful.
Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, usukāro tejanaṃ dvīsu alātesu ātāpeti paritāpeti ujuṃ karoti kammaniyaṃ. 28. "Suppose, bhikkhus, an arrowsmith were warming and heating an arrow shaft between two flames, making it straight and workable.
Yato kho, bhikkhave, usukārassa tejanaṃ dvīsu alātesu ātāpitaṃ hoti paritāpitaṃ ujuṃ kataṃ [ujuṃ kataṃ hoti (sī.)] kammaniyaṃ, na so taṃ aparena samayena usukāro tejanaṃ dvīsu alātesu ātāpeti paritāpeti ujuṃ karoti kammaniyaṃ. When the arrow shaft had been warmed and heated between the two flames and had been made straight and workable, then at a later time he would not again warm and heat the arrow shaft and make it straight and workable.
Taṃ kissa hetu? Why is that?
Yassa hi so, bhikkhave, atthāya usukāro tejanaṃ dvīsu alātesu ātāpeyya paritāpeyya ujuṃ kareyya kammaniyaṃ svāssa attho abhinipphanno hoti. The purpose for which that arrowsmith had warmed and heated the arrow and made it straight and workable has been achieved;
Tasmā na aparena samayena usukāro tejanaṃ dvīsu alātesu ātāpeti paritāpeti ujuṃ karoti kammaniyaṃ. that is why at a later time he would not again warm and heat the arrow shaft and make it straight and workable.
Evameva kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu iti paṭisañcikkhati – 'yathāsukhaṃ kho me viharato akusalā dhammā abhivaḍḍhanti, kusalā dhammā parihāyanti; dukkhāya pana me attānaṃ padahato akusalā dhammā parihāyanti, kusalā dhammā abhivaḍḍhanti. 29. "So too, a bhikkhu considers thus...(AS in §27 above)
Yaṃnūnāhaṃ dukkhāya attānaṃ padaheyya'nti.
So dukkhāya attānaṃ padahati.
Tassa dukkhāya attānaṃ padahato akusalā dhammā parihāyanti, kusalā dhammā abhivaḍḍhanti.
So na aparena samayena dukkhāya attānaṃ padahati.

Evampi, bhikkhave, saphalo upakkamo hoti, saphalaṃ padhānaṃ. Thus too, bhikkhus, the exertion is fruitful, the striving is fruitful.
